Fiji's NFP seeks removal of Christianity as constitutional founding value

Fiji Times Fiji

The National Federation Party in Fiji has called for Christianity to be removed as a founding constitutional value of the state. Party president Parmod Chand stated that the next Constitution must protect the rights and identities of all religious communities. While the party supports historical recognition in the preamble, it opposes entrenching Christianity under Clause 1. The NFP also demands an extension of public consultation until mid-December and translation of the proposed Constitution into vernacular languages. These conditions are attached to the party's continued participation in the parliamentary committee reviewing the constitutional amendments. The party argues that legitimacy must stem from informed public consent rather than political convenience.

Fiji Times Fiji

Residents and church leaders in Vuda, Fiji, concluded a three-day celebration marking two centuries since Christianity arrived in the region on September 26, 1826. The event included community festivities, a thanksgiving service, and traditional cultural performances. Taukei Nakelo Josaia Natakele highlighted the spiritual significance of the gatherings, noting that the community had observed a period of restriction for younger members since February. The bicentenary honored the heritage of the vanua o Vuda, which has produced notable ministers and dignitaries who contributed to Fiji's national development. The celebrations emphasized unity, faith, and cultural preservation in the Lautoka area.
