Fiji's NFP seeks removal of Christianity as constitutional founding value
The National Federation Party in Fiji has called for Christianity to be removed as a founding constitutional value of the state. Party president Parmod Chand stated that the next Constitution must protect the rights and identities of all religious communities. While the party supports historical recognition in the preamble, it opposes entrenching Christianity under Clause 1. The NFP also demands an extension of public consultation until mid-December and translation of the proposed Constitution into vernacular languages. These conditions are attached to the party's continued participation in the parliamentary committee reviewing the constitutional amendments. The party argues that legitimacy must stem from informed public consent rather than political convenience.
