You want to just lift up holy hands? Lift up. Holy hands. Paul said, I wish that men would pray everywhere lifting up holy hands. That means you know your sins are forgiven. Anyone here know their sins are forgiven? You have no ought against your brother.
He said without doubt, without wrath or doubting. You're not doubting about your forgiveness and you have no wrath against anyone. Your relationship with God and with man is a sign of lifted hands. That's not a charismatic thing. That's a declaration of forgiveness and forgiving. Can you say amen? Hallelujah. Give the Lord a praise. I want to do something today praying over our nation as you stand there in the presence of the Lord. As you know, this week we will celebrate 250 years of America. And I have a reading I'm going to read and then we're going to pray together over this nation. We're praying regularly for nations of the world. You're going to hear more from us on Venezuela. As you know, they've just had multiple earthquakes and Jerry, Vaughn and Teresa Vaughn, of course, spending many years there. And we have some Venezuelans among us who are very aware of the need that's there. We pray regularly. Just a couple of weeks ago, we had a gal from Iran speaking here on a Sunday morning and our burden and our hearts going out to those nations as well. But how many know America also needs prayer and we need the church awakened. Every time God's done something miraculously in a nation, he awakens his church. And so I want to read a declaration over. I want to read a declaration over our nation in remembrance of what we are celebrating this week of the 250 years. As we celebrate our nation's independence, we also give thanks for the remarkable Christian heritage that helped shape the founding of the United States. Our founders were not alike in all of their theology, but they shared a deep respect for the Bible.
The principles of God's moral law, and the conviction that our rights come not from government, but from our creator. In fact, four times in the declaration, God is mentioned. The Declaration of Independence boldly declares that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain unenable rights. It also appeals to the laws of nature and of nature's God. Expresses a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence because it ends by saying, with a firm reliance, on the protection of divine providence. John Adams, one of the founders, wrote, Our Constitution was made only, listen to this, for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. That's why there has to be revival and righteousness in our land. George Washington reminded the nation in his farewell address that religion and morality are indispensable supports of political progressions. and prosperity. Patrick Henry, you remember his name, declared it cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians. Not on religion, but on the gospel. Patrick Henry, America's founding, as we all know, was not perfect. No human endeavor is. But the vision at its core was rooted in the accountability to God and the belief that freedom is not a gift from the government, but from all 90.
As Christians, we are heirs to something remarkable. The freedoms we enjoy to worship, to gather, to preach, to live out faith openly, were fought for and framed by people who believed, as we do, that God is sovereign, that truth is real, and that a nation blessed by Him has a responsibility to honor Him. And together, I want you to read the few words out of Psalm 3, 33 and 12 aloud with me. Are you ready? Together. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. If you're with friends and family that you would stand in solidarity with, would you join hands with them? And we're going to pray for awakening of life and healing in our nation. Father, we gather together here and we know that we're just a small representation of what's going on across this nation. And we're well aware that there needs to be a change. There needs to be tremendous remove of the Spirit, healing and revival. And we've noticed that a nation, the further it gets away from the Gospel, the more calamity, the more destruction, the more disunity. For Your Word says in Psalm 22, any nation refused to kiss the Son will perish from the earth. We ask You, O God, for forgiveness for the sins of our nation. And we ask You, O God, that You would show us how to pray and intercede that the church be awakened and alive in this nation. And in the midst, of evil, there also would be a move of great righteousness and holiness. Start with us right here in this room. Hearts of forgiveness. Hearts of true compassion and honoring one of another. We honor You today, Father, and we give You all the glory and the praise. If you agree with that, give the Lord a great praise, would you? A celebration for the freedoms that we do have. This week we'll be gathering on the grounds here Thursday night for a great celebration. I want to give you a chance to love on one another before you're seated. If you'll find somebody you come to worship with, our children will be being dismissed to their classes. If you have someone that you've not met, take a moment and greet them and get acquainted, would you?
Give you just a second to do that. Those of you online, thank you for joining us. Well, as you take your seats, we're going to finish getting ready right behind me. Panelists, y'all can come on up and find your spot. We'll get the mics to you in just a second. Good morning. We get to do something today today. I think it's so cool. And actually, it's now the third time in about six or eight weeks where we've gotten to do this because on our Mother's Day and our Father's Day services, we were able to hear from people among us and about God's great work of faithfulness and provision and strength in their lives. And so today we're going to do that one more time in the area of generosity. As you may know, one of the things we like to do here at DLC is to really go into the Word of God progressively. And for the last several years in a row, we've had a book that we went through for the entire year, start to finish in that book. And this year, we're going through 2 Corinthians. And it's been such a strength because there are times where the Word itself addresses things that you might not normally address typically on a regular Sunday morning. Although this is one of those things we might normally talk about because it's, it's such an incredible strength to the body talking about generosity. And so I'm going to read a passage to get us started. 2 Corinthians 9, starting in verse 6 through 15. So if you want to turn there, I'm going to read it out of the New Living Translation. It's talking about what does it look like and what is the part behind real, true generosity. Here's what it says. Remember this, a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop, but the one who plants, generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your own heart how much to give and don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully and God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the scriptures say, they share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer. Some versions say seed for the sower and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving. The needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met and they will be blessed. They will joyfully express their thanks to God. As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God for your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the good news of Christ. And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words.
So today what we're going to do is go through a series of questions and have some of those among us share about their journey. With generosity. Now before we get to the panel, I want some participation. I want you to tell the truth. This is going to help frame what we do today, okay? So by a show of hands, who here has ever received a gift from somebody that was as if the Lord himself was giving because of the great need that you have, right? We all know what that feels like. Who here among us has ever been moved negatively emotionally because of a financial circumstance you were facing? Maybe trying to take it in our own strength. Maybe trying to move something in our own power. And who would desire to express generosity to the world around you in a greater level, right? We all would love to do that. And so as we ask these questions here, not just the stories themselves and the responses, but hear the Holy Spirit in your own life as he's prompting each of us to grow in this area.
So I'm really excited for today. Let's start by just meeting our panel. If you would, just we'll go down starting here on this end and working our way that way. Introduce yourself, how long you've been a part of DLC and a little bit about your family so we can get to know each of you.
I'm Rocky Ellis. This is my wife, Jennifer. We've been here two and a half years. We got two daughters, one, Courtney's 29 and Ashley is 26. Two grandbabies, one, three, and one just getting ready to turn one. Anything? That's great. We're Ed and Lisa Gilschleiter and we've been here for 44 years and we have four children and 10 grandchildren and their ages are? Our daughter's 45 and then we have three sons, 42, 39, and Luke just had a birthday and he's 37. I'm Calvin. He's 53. We grew up in high school here and we moved away for 10 years and so we're back and we've been back for two years now. Oh, we have three children. We have Kelly, she's five years old, Milo is one year old and the one we've been with solely is three years old. Listen, you guys today, if you don't know these couples or their families, I promise you after they share you're going to want to but let me tell you that we are blessed today to hear from you. From these three couples and the overflow of God at work in their life and so much of generosity really is embracing the idea that because God has provided for us, we can give out of that and it's not up to us to keep what is ours for ourselves but to be obedient to the Lord and so for the first question, if we assume that when you become a believer, it's easy to see God as our Savior, to believe that He's the Lord of our life but what did it look like for you to really embrace or understand what it meant for God to be your source, to be your provider, not just the one who saves and we want to keep this like a conversation so anybody that would like to start, we'll bounce around, make sure everybody gets time but what did that look like to embrace God as your source?
I'll call on people too, I don't mind. Yes, Sam, you want to start? Is that all right? Sure. When I think of this, I really just want to give for the way that they modeled this and they really just lived this out in front of me and my siblings. I'm the oldest of three. They had me when I was really young, when they were really young. They were 17 and 18 and I just remember them being really open about tithing and giving and just kind of letting it come alongside them as they were learning and they weren't perfect in this. There was times where they didn't tithe and they would give into fear that we wouldn't have enough or that we were alone. Things would be hard and they would sit back and never trust the Lord as they're provided. I remember my mom saying that their 90% goes way farther when it's less from the Lord than anything that they could afford something. So for me, growing up with that childhood and moving it to being a soul, it really was just, it just instilled deep in me that this is just a true principle that when you're generous, that the Lord blesses that and there's a real freedom in that.
Yeah. We'll just work our way this way. And Lisa? I was also blessed with parents that were very generous. We always got an allowance and we were taught to tithe, to save in the storehouse and then the rest was still the Lord's. You know, we could do, but we were, you know, to ask Him. But the story that, that really came to mind is my mother was a first grade teacher and usually would pick out students that she knew really, really needed help. And then she would involve my sister and I and we would go shopping and gather whatever these families would need. She was always very respectful, did not let the kids know that it was her. And so the one that stands out to me is we had done some Christmas shopping for a little girl and I really didn't want to go. I wanted to go out to give the presents, but Mom made me. And I was, you know, in grade school. And we went out. I wasn't in grade school because she didn't start teaching until junior high. Sorry, I was in high school. And we went out and we had to get out of the car and it was late at night because we were being Santa, you know, and she didn't want the kids to know. And when we walked in the house, it was a dirt floor and had newspapers glued up. On the walls. And that really got me. And, but I knew that we were being used of the Lord. And so I just knew that generosity was a part and that it was all Christ and that, you know, we did that for others. People would do that for us when we would be in need and that we just would never lack. Well, for us, I think, you know, when we got into our walk, we didn't really have any, I didn't have any upbringing up in the church. Or anything like that. So, you know, when we got, turned our life over to Christ, we just kind of muddled through, you know, hitting walls and everything else the best we could. Didn't have no discipleship or anything like that. But, you know, we didn't really know what the process was or, you know, really how things worked or anything like that.
But, you know, whenever we got, we gave our life to Christ and we, you know, kind of started a prayer life and going to church, we didn't have any, we didn't have a lot of money. You know, but we needed a car. So, my friend Anthony, he was in, he sold cars back then. We called and was like, hey, you know, we need a vehicle and we didn't know if we could even buy one. So, we knew we probably couldn't afford one, but we were, you know, you gotta kind of make that first step, you know. So, we call him and we go down there and he let's us take a car for the weekend and that's that deal, they get you when they get you. But, so we drove it around, you know, for the weekend and there's no way we could pay for it. I mean, there was, you know, we couldn't even hardly pay the bills we had, much less a car payment, you know. So, we had decided after the weekend that, you know, we were going to take it back. She was gonna take it back Monday morning. And so, I'm on my way to work, ran Monday morning. She stayed at home. And I felt like the, you know, the Holy Spirit just kind of sit in the car next to me and was talking, you know, audible, Sam, you know, that's, that's your car, you know, this is what I'm giving you. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna make the payments. I'm going to, and I'm gonna pay it off early. So, I call her and I'm crying. But I've never had an experience like that before, whenever you felt like, you know, the Holy Spirit or God was talking to you, you know, right there in this presence that's around you. So, I'm sure I'm, I think I was crying and I was telling her, we can't take the, you know, we can't take the car back. We have to, we're gonna have to, we gotta go buy this car, you know. So. All the way to work, I'm, after this, I'm in my mind saying, well, if we do our trade in, we, you know, we, you know, it can't be too much of a payment, you know, we'll probably be all right. And then it was like, Holy Spirit kind of chastised me saying that. I didn't say trade in a car. I said, you're gonna go buy one. And I got something else in mind for this other, your trade in. So, I'm like, okay.
So, we get, I said, we get home and we're gonna go to talk to Anthony. I don't even know if we can even get finance because, you know, we didn't have any credit, you know. I mean, anyway, we get down there and we, and we get to buy it and we get, you know, good financing, which was a miracle. I mean, and so we get this car and we don't know how we're gonna pay for it. So, you know, we're stepping on faith. We didn't even know what faith was, guys, really, to be honest with you, we didn't know. But we stepping out in something, you know, because he said he could do it. And made every payment and there was money left over. And the trade in, we ended up giving, he said to give it to the church. So, we went and gave it to the church, somebody, you know, he blessed somebody in the house over there where we were at, but that was the beginning for us.
You know, whenever that was a very, when you look back and you say, this is how, this is the first thing that God has ever done for us or changed our life, besides being saving, you know, besides being my savior, that was the first step on any kind of faith that we ever had, you know. So, and there's more to it, but I think. Yeah, that's great. You know, I think that each of those, stories is so meaningful to highlighting something that you're gonna hear all day long today, which is that to really walk in a spirit of generosity, to really trust the Lord with what you have, requires that you be connected to the Holy Spirit and trusting the Lord. It's not just a behavioral performance based thing that we do to check the box, but it really is, it goes beyond that. And so, the next question I'd like to ask, and, and particularly as it relates to just giving out of performance versus fear, versus all the things that come connected to finances, is how do you walk out being a good steward of what the Lord's given you while also being generous and not getting pulled into performing or into fear or that kind of thing? What does it look like to be a good steward of what the Lord's given you while also, you know, being generous? Well, for us, we always look back on God's track record and it's perfect. And we've never gone hungry. We've always, God's always provided for us. We've had times early on when the cupboards were almost bare and yet God would bring money into us above what we needed. But I had to change over from works of, I can do this. I can work harder. I can work longer. I can outsmart everybody else. I can do this. To realize that I had nothing, finally, I wasn't meeting our needs and finally, completely and totally relying on what God would bring in. And yes, God wants me to work hard and be a good worker and be a good provider and a good steward and take care of my family and take care of others. But there's a balance between relying on everything that I can do for, and, instead of letting God bring a farm in for business for us or a ranch in for business for us. Every time I tried to work at something, it failed. Every time. Every single time. It blew up in my face. But when I would relax and let God bring something into us, it didn't blow up. And it's been lasting. And that's how we have been able to maintain and grow. But early on, it was tight. And it was not fun. We lived paycheck to paycheck. We would tithe, pay our employees, and pay our bills. And hopefully by the third week of the month, we'd have enough money for ourselves. Obviously, that's not obviously, but that has changed. But God had been faithful. And when I could rely totally on Him and not on my hard works is when things turned around in our lives.
Real quick, Lisa, if I can have Ed talk a little longer. Guys, I got to tell you, I love to listen to Ed talk. Would you go a little further in that same thought to share the story you shared in the first service about being tested in your finances? Yeah. So, yeah. So, when we had two children, Jordan is number two. So, this would be about 42 years ago. Lisa, we had $50. Where did we need $50? We needed $50 for formula and baby care. And we didn't have it. We'd had no money. But I did get a birthday check from my parents. So, I cashed that and had put it in my wallet so that the $100 we would be able to, you know, I'd treat myself to whatever I wanted to because it's birthday money. But that's all we had. That's all we had. We're in church for two weeks. We're in church. And during that service, a man was, we found out that this man lost his house that week, burned up, burned everything. And so, I felt impressed. We felt impressed.
I did. We did to give the $100, which we were going to use for that formula to get us through the next two weeks. And so, we gave to this man because he lost everything. And so, by the end of the service, we're leaving. And an usher came up to us and gave us $100 that somebody had given us. You know, obviously, nobody knew that we gave the $100 away, all we needed. But God had provided somebody, thank God, they were listening to the Holy Spirit, and gave, said, give this money to Ed. So, it was $100 and took care of exactly what we needed. So, Jordan didn't starve to death. I just wanted to say that, you know, as a couple, your journey should be taken together. And one thing that when we would get in fear or there would be a lack, and I don't know about you, but sometimes I would have the money spent in my head and he would have the money spent in his head for different things.
And I was taking care of the bills. And so, we would sit down every week and just, you know, open up your finances, you pray, you look at your bills. But, you know, this is not a sprint. This is a long, lifelong journey of being very systematic and very methodical. And eventually, you will see, because, you know, crop doesn't grow overnight. And so, you're planting seed. And one thing that we did that proven any time we would get in fear or we felt lack or it would be like a press or I don't know how we're going to do this. We need to look for ways to give. Let's ask the Lord for divine appointments together and decide where we're going to give.
And has always, he has proven himself over and over. You cannot out give God. You can't. And that was the way that we would get out of fear and past and just be. A matter of the heart, it doesn't have to be money. You know, it's whatever is in your hand and just obey. It's never the amount. It's just always just about obedience. And we weren't, when we were first married, I goofed up and I did not put my tithe first in my head. Well, I'll just take care of these bills in the next week. You know, we'll make up. That was the hardest. I hardly ever made it up. And I thought, how is this not? It should be a quick process, but it wasn't. The Lord, I will never steal from you again. I will, you know, and he taught me a big lesson that it came real fast when I did that.
Calvin and Sam, you guys just, we've kind of asked two questions here, but however you'd like to answer the idea of what does it look like with what you have, but not getting into performance or fear or what does it look like to you as it relates to things of finances? Let's kind of open that to you guys. So for me, for us, it's only by the Holy Spirit. To find that balance, because I'm very detail oriented and I'm there on the side of being very competitive. And so far that way, but something that the Lord has given me, especially this year and this season, taking his finger on every little area and saying, Hey, submit this to me. You're not trusting me here. And so that's just been the season that we're in this area and having to submit that over. There's such a freedom in that and are so much smoother whenever we're slowing down to listen to the Holy Spirit. That's the key. All right, Calvin, I'm coming right back to you. You know, that is really important, particularly as it relates to the body. The generosity is not limited to dollars, right? There's generosity of spirit. There's generosity as it relates to just ministry and being with people and people. Things like that. And so, Calvin, would you share about the generosity that wasn't necessarily dollars, but when you guys were in a tough season to make your home a little more comfortable for you? Yeah. I was a pilot before I made the record. And I just didn't have, can't have, didn't have any further from the house. But equally as important, you shouldn't have a newborn mom and a newborn baby. So. You know, I think. that it's, it's important, you know, Lisa, you just on how crops don't return overnight. When seed is planted, it takes time to grow and to produce fruit. We know, we know all of this just by looking at nature. This is the goodness of our God is that we can look and, but for him to help make the connections in our spirit to know, but, but a tree that produces fruit to produce fruit. Very few things in nature are single harvest thing.
