Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SermonWave: transcripts, Bible study tools, captions and translation.

The Basics

What is SermonWave?

SermonWave helps churches engage the whole congregation with every sermon. You record the service from OBS Studio or a web device in your browser. SermonWave produces an accurate transcript timed to the audio, a summary and outline, linked scripture with Bible study tools, and live captions on any phone. Translation into Spanish or French is available as an add-on. No app download required.

What do we need to get started?

A computer in your sound booth that receives the pastor's mic, or OBS Studio if you stream. Open the web device in Chrome, Edge or Safari, or install the OBS plugin (in beta), and choose the input that carries the pastor's mic. A dedicated SW1 box for the soundboard is coming soon.

How does SermonWave work?

(1) Your web device or the OBS plugin sends the sermon audio to SermonWave, and AI speech recognition turns it into text that appears as live captions within seconds. (2) After the service, SermonWave saves the sermon with a formatted transcript, summary, outline, quotes and linked scripture. (3) Your congregation opens it from your listen link or QR code. With the Translation add-on, captions, a spoken voice and transcripts are also available in other languages.

Do congregants need to download an app?

No. Everything works in a web page: listeners scan a QR code or open your link, and the sermon appears in their browser. No app store, no account, no downloads. It works on any phone with a web browser.

Setup & Equipment

How long does initial setup take?

Most churches set up in one sitting: create your account, add a web device or pair the OBS plugin, choose the pastor's mic input, and share your QR code. There's no hardware to install.

Does someone need to operate it each Sunday?

Barely. With the OBS plugin, SermonWave starts and stops with your stream or recording. A web device runs in a browser tab on the booth computer. Everything after the service (transcript, summary, scripture links and emails) happens automatically.

Do we need special hardware?

No. A web device runs in Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer you already have, and the OBS plugin runs inside OBS Studio. The SW1, a dedicated box that needs no computer, is coming soon.

What sound systems does it work with?

Any setup that gets the pastor's mic into a computer: an audio interface, a USB mixer, or the audio you already send to your livestream. If OBS or your browser can hear it, SermonWave can use it.

Can we order the SW1 box?

Not yet. The SW1 box is coming soon. Until then, a web device or the OBS plugin does the same job on a computer you already have.

How It Works Under the Hood

Does it need internet to work?

Yes. Transcription and translation run on SermonWave's own servers, so the computer running your web device or OBS needs an internet connection. Listeners need Wi-Fi or a cell signal.

How accurate are the transcripts and translations?

Modern AI transcription is very accurate for clear audio, and SermonWave cleans up the transcript after the service. No transcript or translation is perfect, human ones included, but listeners can follow the sermon closely.

What languages are supported?

Transcription works in the language the pastor preaches: English, Spanish or French. With translation ($15 per language, per device, per month), SermonWave translates live into Spanish and French, and into English from Spanish or French, with captions and a spoken voice. The Bible study pages offer 11 public-domain Bibles in 11 languages. Need another language? Tell us which one.

How long until captions appear?

A few seconds. Captions appear shortly after each sentence is spoken. With translation, the spoken voice follows once the sentence is translated and voiced.

Is our sermon data private?

Yes. Transcription, translation and speech run on SermonWave's own AI servers — your sermon audio is never sent to third-party AI services — and audio travels over encrypted connections. You choose whether each sermon is public, unlisted or private. Our Privacy Policy has the details.

Does translation only work from English to other languages?

No. With the Translation add-on, the pastor can preach in English, Spanish or French. When the pastor speaks Spanish or French, SermonWave can translate into English (and into the other of the two). You can set the speaking language for each device, or let SermonWave detect it automatically.

Phones, Captions & Accessibility

How do listeners follow along?

They scan your QR code or open your listen link. During the service they see live captions. Afterwards they can play the sermon, read the transcript, summary and quotes, and open the Bible panel.

Can listeners use earbuds?

Yes. With the Translation add-on, tapping Listen plays the spoken translation through the phone and earbuds. After the service, anyone can play the sermon audio and follow along word by word.

Can it help the hard of hearing?

Yes. Live captions on each person's own phone work like closed captioning for the sermon, and the saved transcript lets anyone go back over what they missed.

After the Sermon

What happens to the transcript after the service?

Every sermon is saved with its audio and a formatted transcript, plus translations if you use them. You can read it in the dashboard, download a PDF, share it with a link, or publish it on your church's sermon pages.

How does sermon transcription help with Google and SEO?

Search engines can't listen to audio or watch video. If your sermons only exist as recordings, Google has no idea what your pastor said. Transcribed sermons become searchable text on your sermon pages, so when someone searches for a topic your pastor preached about, your church can show up in the results. Translated transcripts can extend this to other languages. Read more about why this matters.

What are sermon summaries?

After each service, AI writes a summary with an outline, key points, scripture references, key quotes and stories. SermonWave emails it to the people on your list, and it appears on the sermon's page, ready for small groups and Bible studies.

Cost & Support

How much does it cost?

SermonWave is $65/month with one web device or OBS plugin: transcripts in the original language, the Bible study tools and the engagement features. Translation is $15 per language, per device, per month, and each additional device or location is $55.25/month (15% off). Unlimited hours. We never charge by the hour. Every account starts with a free 14-day trial, no credit card required. See full pricing details.

Is there a contract?

No contracts. Month-to-month billing, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on your first payment. Cancel anytime from your dashboard.

What about multi-campus churches?
