I saidH559 in my heartH3820, Come nowH3212, I will proveH5254 thee with mirthH8057; therefore enjoyH7200 pleasureH2896: and, behold, this also was vanityH1892. I saidH559 of laughterH7814, It is madH1984; and of mirthH8057, WhatH2090 doethH6213 it? I searchedH8446 in my heartH3820 how to cheerH4900 myH1320 flesh with wineH3196, my heartH3820 yet guidingH5090 me with wisdomH2451, and how to lay holdH270 on follyH5531, till I might seeH7200 what it was goodH2896 for the sonsH1121 of menH120 that they should doH6213 under heavenH8064 allH4557 the daysH3117 of their lifeH2416. I made me greatH1431 worksH4639; I buildedH1129 me housesH1004; I plantedH5193 me vineyardsH3754; I madeH6213 me gardensH1593 and parksH6508, and I plantedH5193 treesH6086 in them of all kinds of fruitH6529; I madeH6213 me poolsH1295 of waterH4325, to waterH8248 therefrom the forestH3293 where treesH3293 were rearedH6779; I boughtH7069 men-servantsH5650 and maid-servantsH8198, and had servants bornH1121 in my houseH1004; also I had greatH7235 possessionsH4735 of herdsH6629 and flocks, aboveH1241 all that were beforeH6440 me in JerusalemH3389; I gatheredH3664 me also silverH3701 and goldH2091, and the treasureH5459 of kingsH4428 and of the provincesH4082; I gatH6213 me men-singersH7891 and women-singersH7891, and the delightsH8588 of the sonsH1121 of menH120, musical instrumentsH7705, and that of all sorts. So I was greatH1431, and increasedH3254 more than all that were beforeH6440 me in JerusalemH3389: also my wisdomH2451 remainedH5975 with me. And whatsoever mine eyesH5869 desiredH7592 I keptH680 not from them; I withheldH4513 not my heartH3820 from any joyH8057; for my heartH3820 rejoicedH8056 because of all my laborH5999; and this was my portionH2506 from all my laborH5999. Then I lookedH6437 on all the worksH4639 that my handsH3027 had wroughtH6213, and on the laborH5999 that I had laboredH5999 to doH6213; and, behold, all was vanityH1892 and a strivingH7469 after windH7307, and there was no profitH3504 under the sunH8121. And I turnedH6437 myself to beholdH7200 wisdomH2451, and madnessH1947, and follyH5531: for what can the manH120 do that comethH935 afterH310 the kingH4428? even that which hath been doneH6213 long agoH3528. Then I sawH7200 thatH3426 wisdomH2451 excellethH3504 follyH5531, as far as lightH216 excellethH3504 darknessH2822. The wise man'sH2450 eyesH5869 are in his headH7218, and the foolH3684 walkethH1980 in darknessH2822: and yet I perceivedH3045 that oneH259 eventH4745 happenethH7136 to them all. ThenH227 saidH559 I in my heartH3820, As it happenethH4745 to the foolH3684, so will it happenH7136 even to meH1571; and why was I then moreH3148 wiseH2449? Then saidH1696 I in my heartH3820, that this also is vanityH1892. For of the wiseH2450 man, even asH5973 of the foolH3684, there is no remembranceH2146 for everH5769; seeingH3528 that in the daysH3117 to comeH935 all will have been long forgottenH7911. And how doth the wiseH2450 man dieH4191 even as the foolH3684! So I hatedH8130 lifeH2416, because the workH4639 that is wroughtH6213 under the sunH8121 was grievousH7451 unto me; for all is vanityH1892 and a strivingH7469 after windH7307. And I hatedH8130 all my laborH5999 wherein I laboredH5999 under the sunH8121, seeing that I must leaveH3240 it unto the manH120 that shall be afterH310 me. And who knowethH3045 whether he will be a wiseH2450 man or a foolH5530? yet will he have ruleH7980 over all my laborH5999 wherein I have laboredH5999, and wherein I have showed myself wiseH2449 under the sunH8121. This also is vanityH1892. Therefore I turned aboutH5437 to causeH2976 my heartH3820 to despairH2976 concerning all the laborH5999 wherein I had laboredH5999 under the sunH8121. For there isH3426 a manH120 whose laborH5999 is with wisdomH2451, and with knowledgeH1847, and with skilfulnessH3788; yet to a manH120 that hath not laboredH5998 therein shall he leaveH5414 it for his portionH2506. This also is vanityH1892 and a greatH7227 evilH7451. For what hathH1933 a manH120 of all his laborH5999, and of the strivingH7475 of his heartH3820, whereinH1931 he laborethH6001 under the sunH8121? For all his daysH3117 are but sorrowsH4341, and his travailH6045 is griefH3708; yea, even in the nightH3915 his heartH3820 taketh no restH7901. This also is vanityH1892. There is nothing betterH2896 for a manH120 than that he should eatH398 and drinkH8354, and make his soulH5315 enjoyH7200 goodH2896 in his laborH5999. ThisH2090 also I sawH7200, that it is from the handH3027 of GodH430. For who can eatH398, or who can have enjoymentH2363, moreH2351 than I? For to the manH120 that pleasethH2896 himH6440 God givethH5414 wisdomH2451, and knowledgeH1847, and joyH8057; but to the sinnerH2398 he givethH5414 travailH6045, to gatherH622 and to heap upH3664, that he may giveH5414 to him thatH6440 pleasethH2896 GodH430. This also is vanityH1892 and a strivingH7469 after windH7307.
